This month, the team at Fairways Newydd, our nursing home in Anglesey, gathered to celebrate the retirement of Registered Nurse Daisy Richards, who retired at the age of 86 after a nursing career that began in 1958. Sixty-eight years of service. Countless lives touched. And a legacy of dignity, compassion and clinical excellence that will shape our home for years to come.
A Nursing Career Spanning Almost Seven Decades
When Daisy began her nursing journey in 1958, the NHS was barely ten years old. In the decades that followed, she held key roles across hospitals, nursing homes and community care settings, raising the standard of care wherever she worked. Her leadership and expertise became a benchmark for colleagues, always grounded in the belief that compassion and dignity belong at the heart of nursing. When Daisy rejoined the team at Fairways Newydd in Llanfairpwll in 2021, she brought that same energy and commitment, mentoring colleagues, promoting best practice, and forming a genuine bond with the residents in her care.
Recognised at the Wales Care Awards
Daisy’s contribution has been celebrated far beyond our home. At the Wales Care Awards 2024 in Cardiff, she was honoured with the Gold Award for Dignity in Care and the Bronze Award for Outstanding Service in Care. In the same year, she was shortlisted for the Outstanding Achievement in Care Award at the Caring UK Awards. For everyone at Fairways Newydd, these accolades simply confirmed what residents, families and colleagues already knew: Daisy represents the very best of nursing in Wales.
