Celebrating Generations, Memories and New Beginnings

Care Home Open Week at Fairways

Some weeks remind us exactly why we do what we do. Care Home Open Week 2026, held from 15 to 21 June, was one of them. Across our Fairways Care homes in North Wales, our homes opened their doors and invited families, friends and neighbours to see what everyday life here really looks like: full of music, laughter, friendly competition and moments that will stay with us for a long time. From an orchestral performance to a wedding dress in the lounge, this year’s celebrations brought generations together in the most wonderful ways.

Here is a look back at a week we will not forget.

A Musical Journey Through Time with Sinfonia Cymru

Few things lift a room quite like live music, and our residents were treated to something truly special when musicians from Sinfonia Cymru came to perform. The programme travelled through the decades, and it did not take long for toes to start tapping and voices to join in with the familiar melodies.

Live music holds a special place in care settings. Familiar songs can spark memories, encourage conversation and bring people together in a shared moment, which is especially meaningful for residents living with dementia.

Care Home Open Week at Fairways was full of heartwarming celebrations and lively activities that brought everyone closer together. Our residents were treated to a musical journey through time with Sinfonia Cymru and embraced the competitive spirit with football-themed games like bingo, target practice, and tabletop football. The nostalgia continued as we travelled back to 1966 to relive England’s World Cup victory with music, dancing, and trophy-themed art, while also marking the beautiful 1965 wedding anniversary of Donald and Vera with a special four-generation celebration. Perhaps the most touching moment was the surprise wedding celebration we hosted for one of our staff members; surrounded by her residents and colleagues in her wedding dress, she truly felt the love of her “Fairways family.”

Football Fever and the Spirit of 1966

With football in the air this summer, our homes embraced the competitive spirit with a full lineup of football-themed games. Residents took aim at target practice, battled it out over tabletop football and marked off their cards in a lively round of football bingo. The friendly rivalry brought out plenty of laughter and more than a little competitive edge!

The nostalgia went one step further as we travelled back to 1966 to relive England’s famous World Cup victory. Residents enjoyed music and dancing from the era and created their own trophy-themed artwork, sharing memories of where they were when the final whistle blew.

Sixty-One Years of Love

Celebrating Donald and Vera

Amid all the excitement, one celebration was especially close to our hearts. Donald and Vera, who married in 1965, marked their wedding anniversary surrounded by four generations of their family. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered together to honour a love story spanning more than six decades.

Moments like these are at the heart of life at Fairways. Family milestones do not stop when someone moves into a care home; if anything, they become even more precious. Our team loves nothing more than helping families celebrate together, whether that means arranging a special meal, decorating a room or simply making sure there are enough chairs for everyone. Congratulations, Donald and Vera. Here is to many more happy years together.

A Surprise Wedding Celebration for One of Our Own

Perhaps the most touching moment of the week belonged to one of our own team members. Ahead of her wedding, residents and colleagues secretly planned a surprise celebration, and when she arrived in her wedding dress, the room erupted with joy.

Surrounded by the residents she cares for every day, she said she truly felt the love of her Fairways family. It was a beautiful reminder that the bonds formed in our homes go both ways. Our residents give just as much love, encouragement and friendship to our team as they receive, and moments like this show what a genuine community looks like.
